Abcess
Symptoms
A hot and painful swelling develops under the skin which becomes hard. The skin in the centre will become thinner and eventually rupture, releasing pus. The horse may have a high temperature and a loss of appetite.
Cause
Usually caused by a penetration wound with foreign material accessing the body.
Treatment
Any wound should be thoroughly cleaned and all foreign material removed to prevent an abscess from starting. An antibiotic treatment may stop the abscess from forming if applied early enough. If the horse has not been vaccinated an anti-tetanus shot should be given. Hot poultices or drawing agents can be used in the later stages to encourage the abscess to burst; otherwise your vet may need to open it. Care will then be needed to clean the wound thoroughly and keep it open whilst it heals from the case outwards.
