Buttress Foot

Symptoms

Lameness will be present and heat may be felt in the hoof, as well as a swelling on the front of the coronary band. The horse may hang the affected leg above the ground with only the toe touching the floor. The foot may become more boxy over time and the foot changes shape, appearing more upright.

Cause

Excessive strain or a blow to a leg which causes new bone to form as well as swelling at the front of the pedal bone.

Treatment

Complete rest is needed for up to three months although lameness may never completely disappear if the damage was severe. Fractures may need to be tended by a veterinary surgeon for them to heal properly.
