Symptoms

Horses appears depressed, mucous membranes are discoloured, high pulse and temperature. In the more advanced stages shock sets in and the temperature drops to very low levels, diarrohoea develops and death is very likely.

Cause

Related to stress although the exact cause is not known. May develop after surgery or a long course of antibiotics.

Treatment

An immediate fluid therapy and administration of corticosteriods to help the shock can be given, although this may have no effect. The mortality rate is nearly 100%.
