Corneal Ulcer
Symptoms
Horse is obviously in pain, eyelids are closed or the horse is squinting, there is a clear discharge from the eye and it becomes dull and the cornea is cloudy. The area around the eye (conjunctiva) reddens.
Cause
Bacterial or viral infection or trauma to the eye.
Treatment
Ulcers can cause loss of sight so a veterinarian needs to be consulted immediately and the horse needs to be kept out of sunlight. The infection needs to be treated and inflammation reduced. Anti-inflammatories and antibiotic treatment can be used and if the ulcer is severe surgery may be used to aid healing. The conjunctiva will become inflamed causing extra blood vessels to develop and aid the eye in healing.
