Equine Viral Encephalomyelitis

A viral disease of the brain. Various strains exist (Japanese, Venezuelan, Western) although all with similar symptoms and treatments.

Symptoms

A fever, which often goes unnoticed, followed by a period where the horse becomes nervous, aggitated and excitable. Will begin to walk in circles, becoming more diorientated and unco-ordinated, crashing into things.

Cause

Caused by a virus carried by a mosquito which usually infects birds. The mosquitos will occasionally feed on horses when its mosquito population is high. Viral outbreaks are uncommon although epidemics can reach high levels when mosquitos are highly infected.

Treatment

Vaccines are available although there is no specific treatment. Intensive supportive care needs to be given for recovery.
