Folliculitis
Symptoms
Small painful lumps usually formed in areas where ill fitting or dirty tack or equipment has rubbed the skin. They eventually burst and when healed form areas devoid of hair.
Cause
Folliculitis is caused by infection of the hair follicle usually due to ill fitting equipment or poor skin hygiene. Sudden warm weather, poor grooming and a strenuous workload can also be contributing factors.
Treatment
Tack and equipment should be kept clean and be correctly fitted to ensure it is not rubbing and is comfortable for the horse, which will also help prevent other problems from developing. Antibacterial washes can be used and systemic antibiotic treatment may be needed.
