Lymphangitis

Symptoms

Usually caused by a small injury on the lower legs which goes unnoticed and becomes infected. The infection spreads up the lymphatic vessels causing a hot painful swelling which affects the whole limb. Fluid may be secreted from skin and the horse will have a high temperature and be noticeably unwell.

Cause

An infection of the lymph vessels and tissues in the lower legs due to an infected wound which is left untreated. Horses which often have filled legs may be more susceptible, and it can also be misidentified with this.

Treatment

A veterinary surgeon needs to be contacted immediately so that antibiotic can be administered. The imflammation and swelling may then be treated with diuretics and phenylbutazone. If left untreated the situation will be chronic with the horse having scarred, thickened legs permanently.
