Melanoma

Symptoms

Small black lumps found on the skin, usually found near the anus or eyes or in the glands of the neck. They are slow growing but when they turn aggressive they grow more rapidly and spread to other parts of the skin.

Cause

Usually found first in middle aged horses and more commonly in grey horses. They are tumours of the melanin producing cells of the skin.

Treatment

If the lumps are not causing any problems then they should be left alone. Surgery can be used although this can cause the lumps to spread and should only be used if necessary. Some drugs are available that have some effect, although they are expensive. Consult your veterinary surgeon if melanomas form on your horse.
