Mud Fever
Symptoms
Occurs mainly in the winter, with lesions spreading up the leg to the knee or hock. They swell and become painful with the hair matting into clumps and lameness will often be shown.
Cause
Legs being continuously wet softening skin making it easier for it to be abraded. Mud particles then enter and the leg becomes infected by Dermatophilus congolensis.
Treatment
Legs need to be kept clean and dry and be bathed often to remove scabs. Antibiotics may be necessary.
