Otitis Externa
Symptoms
Rubbing affected ear, head shaking, and possible discharge
Cause
Bacterial or fungal infection or an object, e.g. grass seed, becomes lodged in the ear canal, although also associated with ear mites. Otitis Externa is rare and not often seen in horses
Treatment
Ear needs to be cleaned and any foreign bodies removed. A veterinary surgeon can do this more thoroughly with an auroscope. Antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal ear drops can be administered
