Pneumonia
Symptoms
Usually seen in young or old horses. Rapid respiration, fever, poor appetite, weight loss, dullness, cough, nasal discharge, reluctance to move or lie down.
Cause
Caused by an infection of the lung tissue. Sometimes due to streptococcal bacteria, although usually develop as a secondary problem to another disease, such as strangles. Stress, especially during travelling is commonly involved.
Treatment
Please consult your veterinary surgeon as soon as possible, as immediate treatment lowers the possibilty of permanent lung damage. Antibiotics and broncholytic agents need to be administered. Treatment may last from 7 days to 4 weeks or longer.
