Rain Scald

Symptoms

Sores are found along the back, flanks and hindquarters. Scabby crusts form with moist pink inflamed skin underneath. The areas are irritating to the horse and it begins to lose condition.

Cause

Dermatophilus congolensis invades the skin after a lot of rainfall, which washes the protective oils out of the coat and the skin is constantly moist and soft.

Treatment

The horses field should include shelter which will lower the chance of rain scald. The horse should not be fully groomed if being turned out unless a rug is used to protect it from the rain and prevent it from getting cold. If rain scald is caught in the early stages the horse should be kept dry and gently groomed to stimulate the skin. If left too long the skin will need to be shampooed with a medicated wash and all scabs removed. An antibiotic cream can then be applied repeatedly to the sores and systematic antibiotics may need to be used.
