Ringbone
Symptoms
Round scabs appear in areas where rubbing occurs. The scabs increase in number eventually spreading over a large area. Initially small lumps which grow in size and then burst and form scabs.
Cause
A fungal infection caught from another horse or infected equipment.
Treatment
Antibiotics can be placed into the feed for a week which will concentrate in the skin and prevent the fungus from spreading. Antibiotic washes should also be used every four days, covering the whole body so any hidden fungus is treated. This needs to be done at least three times, and until you are sure the infection has gone.
