Stringhalt
Symptoms
One or both hind legs are drawn sharply upwards during movement, then brought sharply down. The amount varies in each case, from hitting the belly to only slight exaggeration. This can affect any horse for no apparent reason, although sometimes it can be seen in agitated horses such as those being backed.
Cause
Most are currently unknown although thought to be associated with nerve degeneration, possibly through consuming poisonous plants. In Australia it is believed horses continually consuming dandelion weed have a similar problem. An injury to the hock may also cause stringhalt.
Treatment
Some cases are only temporary although last for several months. Correct pasture management needs to be used at all times, the pasture should be checked for poisonous plants often and if any are found all horses should be removed from the pasture until they are completely removed. Sedatives may be administered which may improve the stringhalt if it is associated with nervousness, otherwise surgery may be possible, to remove part of the lateral digital extensor tendon and muscle.
