Thoroughpin
Symptoms
Small soft swellings found on either side of the hock, which can be pressed from side to side through the hock. Occasionally mistaken for a bog spavin due to similar swellings.
Cause
Thought to be due to poor leg conformation and instigated by a strenuous workload.
Treatment
Draining the swelling and administering a corticosteroid injection may help in the early stages. Radiation therapy is also possible, although most treatments are usually unsuccessful. Thoroughpins rarely affect the horse except cosmetically, so treatment may not be necessary.
