Warts

Symptoms

Lumps usually found forming in the skin of young horses, especially near the eyes, under the tail or on the muzzle in areas of soft skin. They grow slowly up to around 7mm and are grey to begin with before turning a pinker colour.

Cause

The equine papilloma virus which is caught through abrasions on the skin.

Treatment

Warts will eventually disappear over time, usually in around 8 months. Methods can be used to remove them if necessary, including heat treatments and vaccines, although these can be painful and expensive.
